Feeling the Fringe

If you’re anything like me, you like to be a step ahead of the game. Maybe you start working on a project months before most people would even consider thinking about it. It may be the excitement, the love of the game or maybe a fundamental need for control, whatever the case, you like to get a jump on things. Where am I going with all this? All will be revealed in time...

At this point we’ve been lusting after garments from every fashion week from New York to Paris. I’ve picked up on a trend that can only be a strategic move, given our current place in time with relation to the new year: fringe. Fringed pieces are springing up all over the place in 2020 collections. Some of these pieces have already popped up on the red carpet. Angelina Jolie attended her Maleficent 2 premiere in Tokyo sporting a sparkling, multi-tiered, halter-necked couture Ralph & Russo dress. JLo also appeared this past week in a gilt fringe gown from Versace atelier, head adorned with a metal crown, summoning some queen of the night type vibes.

As we approach the end of the year, I can’t help but think designers are prepping us for the numerous inevitable roaring 20s parties that loom in the not too distant future. Aside from gifting us with an entirely fabulous collection of ready to wear that read as a love letter to Greece, Mary Katrantzou also Made sure to drizzle some fringe based gems into her Spring 2020. Area jumped in on the trend with not only gowns and waists dripping in crystal based fringe, but beards and eye pieces as well. Faces fringed with strands of bling may not be for everyone, but I’m sure we’ll see some sort of facial jewelry crop up just in time to hit the Forever 21 before they shutter for eternity.

Other fashion houses like Schiaparelli and designers like Christian Siriano have also turned to fringe as of late. To me, this is all just predictive programming for our future fashion choices. Glittering edges of various lengths are sure to be factored into our upcoming evening wear. Gatsby era couture is being subtlety sprinkled on our palettes in preparation for parties to come. If you’re a part outfit prepper like me, you’re already coming to terms with how you’ll lean into what will be an obligatory use of the sly trend. I guess if fringe really isn’t your thing, you can always stay home.
