The Clone Wars

Mimicry is child’s play.  It’s also extremely prevalent in the world of fashion, producing trends chased by the likes of Gen Z and those who are incapable of forming their own sense of style.  Why be arsed to discover your own identity when you can borrow someone else’s carefully concocted choices and pass them off as your own?  Kind of like, wearing a legendarily famous icon’s vintage dress to a special event in order to cause a spectacle and potential damage to a aid dress in the process.  Not mentioning any names here…

You may find this immature approach to fashion to be exhausting and juvenile, and you would be correct.  Beyond the age of twenty-five, the part of your brain that encourages you to parrot those around you in exchange for social acceptance should have evolved enough to allow you to be your own person, with your own unique perspective.  There is a difference between homage and appropriation, though the line does seem to blur.

Can you imagine emerging with a blue monogram Gucci just days after their revival just to show the public that you stay up on your Vogue newsletters? Embarrassing or on-trend? Maybe just embarrassingly on-trend? Perhaps it’s a question of personal preference, but I prefer those who dress exactly as they please, with little to no regard of what the rest of the world is doing. What do they call those people? Oh, yes, “trendsetters”.
