The Art of Dressing: Intimidation

I’m sure we’ve all heard the common intimidation practices used by animals in the wild.  Bears will stand on two feet to become larger.  Claws will come out of furry paws.  Certain underwater creatures will change color, whereas horned lizards will spit blood through their eyes.  Some of these practices have even been adapted by the human species.  Typically when we’re seeing red, others will flee, rather than get caught in our crosshairs.

There are other, less feral ways that we can choose to show dominance and feel powerful. For example, science has shown that wearing dark colors can give us the upper hand.  Ever seen a group of blonde-haired-blue-eyeds not weirded out by a flock of goths?  Doubtful.  Sometimes a somber palette says more than a mouthful of words. Speaking without uttering a word is a powerful tool that many adults have yet to master.

However, Anna Wintour—the ice queen of the fashion world, and quite possibly the most intimidating public figure currently walking the earth—never wears all black.  So, how does she do it?  Take a look at her signature shades.  It’s rare to find her out and about without UV coverage.  Indoors, outdoors, the front row of every runway show—she brings her own shade.  Now, it’s totally possible that she’s just has a hard time adjusting to bright light.  I, for one can attest to having this affliction.  I have been given a hard time about it in the past, and if those people could have seen the dirty look I was giving them under my oversized frames, I’m sure they would have though twice.

In addition to dark colors and sunglasses, it helps to take into account silhouette and garment structure as well. Think Alexander McQueen-style leather corset belts, woolen coats and stiff shoulders. A streamlined outfit with crisp corners says, “I’m not taking any crap, so watch out or I’ll stab you with my should pad”. Or, if you’re feeling less aggressive, a simple silk shirt and tailored trousers should do the trick. Dealer’s choice.

Its important to learn what style works best for you. Often there are exceptions to the rules we dress by, or talismans (like sunglasses) we use to supplement our outfits in order to achieve our goals. So whether you’re riding into battle in a pair of charcoal spike heeled thigh highs, or channeling your inner cholo via zoot suit, just make sure to choose your armor wisely.

McQueen is always a good idea.
