Is It Fall Yet?

Depending on your whereabouts, this week you may be facing endlessly sunny days, warranting bouts of air conditioned reprieve, or you’re bracing for hurricanes. These United States are experiencing great disparity when it comes to weather predictions, but I think it’s safe to say that fall is upon us…we hope?

If you find yourself on the west coast then you should be wondering the same thing I’m wondering, that thought being, “Where the f*#% is my fall weather ??” I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for long tweedy coats, scarves and cashmere cardigans. I’m impatiently waiting to brush the dust off my knee boots and appropriate length socks. The only thing standing in the way between me and a Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat is this damnable heat wave. Yes, most people probably do not consider 74 degree weather a “heat wave” but I certainly do. Most would agree it feels “nice” outside, but at this point I think we both know…I am not most people.

So, after what seemed like an eternity, my September issue of Vogue finally arrived in my mailbox. Admittedly, I had begun to wonder if a neighbor had burgled it, but after quickly considering how the neighbor primarily dresses in cat hair—presumably cruelty free—I decided to shake the notion. Breaking down the cover, an accusatory-looking leisure suit-clad Taylor Swift wags a finger at us, invoking equal parts Mick Jagger and the menacing Alex from A Clockwork Orange. Maybe I’m giving her too much street cred, but after taking on the Kardashian-West’s, perhaps she deserves it. In any event, I enjoyed the cover, in spite of the fact that it also resembled Cosmopolitan issue, minus the bedside astrologer.

Once inside, I found all of the lovely adverts one would expect to see come fall. Head to toe covered in textile. Etro paisleys, Canadian tuxedoes, clashing layers of texture and pattern, and yes, oh yes, boots, boots, boots. Now, I know it seems silly to look forward to a periodical chock full of garments and accessories that far exceed several month’s rent (or, perhaps a mortgage payment for the expert level adults), but there’s a bit more to it than that.

The September issue ushers in a changing of season, and also the chance to evolve. For those of us who become increasingly irritable in the heat, getting burned by the cruel summer sun, the winter and fall are welcome allies. And for those who would prefer to walk around in nothing more than their Calvin’s, there’s always the spring and summertime. As the first of September is next on deck, and I sit in the house with the fan on and the windows open, I audibly wonder, “Is it fall yet?” According to Vogue? Yes. According to my recent outfits? Not quite yet.
