When In Flux
Times change, minds change and bodies are no different. With the changing of the seasons usually comes the changing of our wardrobes. We bring out our longer sleeves and taller boots. Sometimes we are met with little surprises along the way, like moth holes in our sweaters or snugger fitting trousers.
It is said that many of us only wear 20% of the clothes in our closets. Generally, I leave about 20% of my closet on the floor after any given mad rush to get ready in the morning. Since we tend to gravitate towards the same pieces, this means we have tons of clothes left out of regular rotation. Sometimes these leftover pieces resurface months later, and we find they fit differently than we remember. This can be a real problem when the outfit you created in your mind gets thrown out the window due to fitting issues. So, what can you do?
Whether you’ve been bulking up on the whey proteins or noticed that Sober October took away your main source of nutrition, there are ways around dressing your fluctuating temple. Never before have leggings been so universally accepted as pants, so now is the time to seize the opportunity to stock up and strut around in your finest Lycra based wares. You can balance a tight legged silhouette by topping it with an oversized sweater or blazer and finishing it up with a good pair of booties. But be careful, one pair of comfortable leggings often leads to multiple pairs, in slightly different sheens and shades of probably black. You may think you are immune, but I highly doubt it.
If stretchy pants are not your thing, fear not. Transitional clothing exists in other forms, like dresses and one piece outfits. Boiler suits tend to look cute fitted or generously sized. Same goes for overalls and most jumpsuits. Shapeless dresses and billowing blouses come in handy after an evening of Domino’s and chill. You can simultaneously retain water and a superior sense of style while stunting in your silk peasant sleeves or dropped waist. Bohemian chic is typically the answer when it comes to pulling off an effortlessly polished look that works with you, not against your gains.
All this being said, it’s best to embrace change. It’s good to change it up rather than risk your style going stale. You can always consign or sell the things you have outgrown. One woman’s skinny pants may be, well, another woman’s skinny pants, so keep the pants traveling along. Should you decide to come on over to the legging dark side, the sisterhood welcomes you.
