Who Wears the Pants

As the temperature attempts to drop you may find yourself layering up like a lasagna, with jeans in place of noodles and saucy cardigans instead of tomatoes. Skinnies and sweaters are a safe bet for foggy days, when most of the day is shrouded in darkness, it’s just easier to blindly grab for something that feels like pants and something knitted to go on top.

Having a capsule wardrobe when it comes to pants can alleviate the pain of getting ready in the morning when you habitually run later than the white rabbit. It’s important to have a mix of silhouettes to avoid feeling like cartoon characters, fated to spend an eternity in the same tragic outfit. The following are my top style picks for a well rounded capsule pant-robe.

The Patterned Skinny—could be animal print, camouflage, polka dots, and preferably in a color way that reads as a neutral. You can add a visible patterned/textured sock with a feel or flat if you want to kick it up a notch. If you keep an array of solid colored tops on hand it makes it easy to grab and go, freeing up your mental space to make more complicated decisions, like your coffee order.

The Wide Leg—could be denim or twill, maybe even tweed. Whether you paper bag them or keep them tidy looking with a belt, they pair well with a fitted knit or cropped situation on top.

The Black Legging—if you’re an athleisure aficionado or just a creature of comfort, chances are you own more than just one pair. Ideally, you have pairs at various price points, stretch and finishes. Lately, my own personal favorite is a bit thicker than the rest and wears like a good pair of yoga pants. I like wearing them with boots and some scrunched knee high socks for extra texture and warmth. You can wear something fitted on top for a nice cat burglar look, or go with an oversized chunky sweater or tunic.
