Extra! Extra!

We love to celebrate the extraordinary.  We champion that which is exceptional, rare and unique.  Whether it be empirically measured or calibrated by something as subjective as a feeling, we know when we are in the presence of something (or someone) that goes above and beyond.  The term all the kids are using to describe this phenomenon these days is “extra”.

While the term “extra” can take on a negative connotation, I prefer to relegate it to the positive realm.  When it comes to behavioral extra-ness, Miss Piggy and Mariah Carey come to mind, however I would also place them in the same circle of extra divas who exhibit next level stylistic splendor.  We see it in the bejeweled fashion choices made by Cher, Elton John, Daphne Guinness, Cardi B and Lady Gaga, to name a few.  Entertainers are expected to be larger than life, glittering and towering over the basic population.  They project a seemingly unattainable kind of look, as they are often dressed like celestial beings, decorated with symbolic emblems.  Celebrities with access to luxury labels may seem to have a leg up when it comes to elaborate get ups, but that doesn’t mean those of us with followings in the triple digits can’t contend.

There are those of us who see no reason not to throw on a five-foot long rainbow fur scarf before our Trader Joe’s run.  The same person wouldn not be deterred from wearing a gold lamé outfit to hibachi.  To some this would be peak extra, to others, just another Tuesday night.  A key factor in being extra lies in the fact that not everyone can achieve it, nor does everyone desire to.  The look boasts a rare confidence that only few can successfully channel.  It’s an aesthetic that reveals one’s own truth.  That truth being that you’re a bad bish who does what she wants.  The attitude is equally as important as the outfit.
